A window sill is not decoration. It has two jobs, and both are about moving water away from your wall.

It sheds. The stone is pitched outward so water runs off it rather than sitting on it or running back toward the window.

It breaks the flow. A properly detailed sill has a drip edge — a groove or projecting lip on the underside — that stops water from wrapping around and tracking back onto the brick. Water will not cross a clean drip edge. It lets go and falls clear.

Lose either function and every drop that hits that window head starts going somewhere it was never meant to go.

  5. Replace the sill where it has cracked through or delaminated across its depth. The surrounding masonry comes down carefully, the new unit is set with proper pitch and a real drip edge, and the brick goes back.
  6. Repair the brick below that the failed sill has been feeding — usually the reason you called.
  7. Repoint and clean down.
