Mortar goes in joints designed to hold still. Flexible sealant goes in joints designed to move. Brick expands and contracts with temperature; aluminum and vinyl window frames move more, and at a different rate. Where materials with different movement meet, the joint has to stretch and compress thousands of times without tearing — and hard mortar has essentially no elasticity to give.

  7. Gun a continuous bead with full contact to both faces.
