What a lintel is and why it fails

A lintel is the beam that carries the masonry across an opening. In Oak Lawn's post-war housing stock it is almost always a steel angle — bare, ungalvanized angle iron set into the wall to hold up the brick over a window, door, or garage header.

Steel in a masonry wall only stays sound as long as it stays dry. Once water reaches it — through an open joint above, a failed sill, missing or deteriorated flashing, or a caulk line nobody has touched in thirty years — it corrodes. And corroding steel does not just weaken; it expands to roughly seven to ten times its original volume. Buried in a wall, that expansion has nowhere to go but out and up. 5. Flash and drain the opening. Through-wall flashing and weeps at the head are what keep water off the steel. Skipping this is why replacements fail early.
6. Rebuild the brick, matched. Salvaged and matched brick is relaid in mortar matched for color, texture, and hardness, and tooled to your existing joint profile.
